Learning electric bass from her brother Roger at Ball State University, Denise joined the newly formed group  Buck's Stove & Range Company as lead vocalist and bassist. She joined Roger and Buck's to travel as far away as Japan, Australia, Egypt, Germany and the Caribbean. After Buck's, Denise switched to rhythm guitar in the Banister Family Bluegrass Band.
